A tragic case in Coralville has revealed disturbing new details, as authorities continue to investigate the death of 41-year-old Amber Martin.
What Happened
Police say 47-year-old James Martin has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing his wife inside their apartment on January 16. Officers responded to reports of a stabbing early that morning and found Amber Martin with multiple injuries. She was declared dead at the scene.
According to investigators, James Martin had planned the attack in advance. He reportedly used a kitchen knife and attacked his wife as she came out of another room.
New Details from Investigation
Recent reports reveal that a family member may have witnessed the incident. James Martin’s mother was at the home that night after becoming concerned about his mental health. She told police she arrived around 1:00 a.m. and later woke up to unusual sounds.
At first, she thought it was a pet, but then she heard cries for help. When she went to check, she allegedly saw her son attacking his wife. She tried to stop him and asked him to call the police when she couldn’t find her phone.
Evidence Found at the Scene
When officers arrived, they found strong evidence inside the home. A knife with blood on it was located in the kitchen sink, and there were signs of blood throughout the apartment, including on clothing.
Authorities say James Martin admitted to the crime. He is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail with a bond set at $1 million.
Possible Motive
Investigators say the suspect claimed he acted to “put her out of her misery,” believing they were facing serious financial problems. However, officials are still working to fully understand the motive behind the crime.
Amber Martin worked with the University of Iowa Health Care as a medical laboratory supervisor. Colleagues described her as kind, intelligent, and full of life, expressing shock and sadness over her sudden death.
