A South Carolina mother who was shot multiple times during the recent Publix shooting in Cane Bay remains in the hospital as she continues a long recovery, according to friends and family.
Mother Shot While Protecting Children
Kelly was one of three people injured during the shooting at the Cane Bay Publix last Thursday night.
Friends said she had gone to the store simply to buy ice cream for her four children when gunfire broke out.
Authorities said 17-year-old Antwan Green and two teenage suspects entered the store looking for a specific target before shots were fired.
Friends Say She Shielded Others
According to loved ones, Kelly’s first reaction during the shooting was to protect her children.
Friends said she used her body to shield not only her own children but also other people inside the store.
“She would do anything for her babies,” one friend said.
Recovery Expected to Be Long
Kelly was shot four times and has already undergone multiple surgeries.
Friends said doctors later discovered severe damage to her elbow that will require a full replacement.
They said she may never again be able to lift more than 30 pounds, a life-changing reality as a single mother of four.
Community Raises Thousands in Support
The Cane Bay community has rallied around Kelly and her children since the shooting.
Friends said more than $34,000 has already been raised to help support the family during her recovery.
Community members have also offered help with cleaning, childcare, and other daily needs.
Teen Suspects Facing Charges
Authorities charged 17-year-old Antwan Green as an adult with three counts of attempted murder and a weapons charge.
Two other 16-year-old suspects were charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.
