A tragic incident in Mascotte has led to the arrest of a man accused of running over a tire shop employee who tried to stop him from leaving without paying. The case has shocked the local community and raised concerns about violent behaviour over small disputes.
Man Accused of Deadly Hit-and-Run
Brandon Charles Gregory Lewis, 33, has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of Ashley Tyer, 40. She worked at Just Stop Tires for seven years and was seriously injured during the incident before passing away on March 21.
What Happened at the Tire Shop
According to police, the incident began on March 16 when Lewis visited the tire shop to have his tires replaced. After the work was completed, he allegedly tried to leave without paying the $95 bill. When employees noticed this, they attempted to stop him.
Witnesses say Lewis first backed his car into another worker while trying to leave. Soon after, Ashley Tyer stepped in front of the vehicle to prevent him from driving away. Police allege that Lewis drove directly into her, causing her to land on the hood before she was thrown off onto the ground, suffering critical injuries.
Witness Accounts and Evidence
Employees and witnesses described the incident as extremely disturbing. They said Lewis continued driving even as Tyer was on the hood of the car and even swerved in an attempt to shake her off. After she fell, he allegedly fled the scene.
Investigators later found damage on Lewis’ vehicle, including a cracked windshield and dented hood, which matched the incident. Surveillance footage and witness statements helped police identify and track him.
Arrest and Charges
Police later located Lewis in a nearby area and took him into custody. During questioning, he denied knowing about the incident and claimed he was elsewhere at the time. However, evidence placed him at the scene.
Authorities also revealed that Lewis had a previous conviction related to vehicular homicide and that his driver’s license had been suspended since 2021.
Legal Status of the Case
Lewis is currently being held at the Lake County Jail with a bond set at $500,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 20 as the case moves forward.
