A brawl over who should pay for brunch turned into a terrifying slashing incident that rocked an upscale downtown Los Angeles restaurant, Zaya, on Sunday evening.
The Incident
Around 5 p.m., an all-female group of diners at Zaya, an Italian eatery known for its “dinner and a show” experience, began arguing over who would foot the bill. The argument quickly escalated, with one woman suddenly brandishing a knife and another grabbing a bottle.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene as the women began slashing at each other, prompting patrons to call the police and Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) for assistance.
Arrests and Injuries
Two women were arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to police. One victim, who suffered cuts to her face, refused medical treatment and left the restaurant on her own.
Four other individuals, aged 26 to 37, were taken to the hospital for treatment. The restaurant, which markets itself as a romantic lounge-style venue with live music, posted an Instagram Story thanking law enforcement and emergency personnel for their swift response.
“We are especially grateful for the swift response of our team, as well as the immediate support of local law enforcement and emergency personnel,” Zaya’s Instagram statement read.
Fleeing Suspect and Police Response
Witnesses reported that a suspect fled the scene with a folding knife along 7th Street and Grand Avenue. Video footage from the scene showed a large police and fire department presence, with dozens of emergency vehicles blocking traffic at the intersection.
One video captured a woman in a white dress being wheeled into the back of an LAFD ambulance. The LAPD Central Division issued a warning about the incident on social media, alerting citizens of the traffic delays caused by the closure of the area.
The Restaurant’s Atmosphere and Event
Zaya is an upscale restaurant and lounge that is known for its dim lighting, cocktails, and live music, making it a popular spot for intimate gatherings and parties. On the night of the incident, the restaurant was hosting an event called Sweet Serenade, with DJs and an emcee providing entertainment.
Jasmine Siders, the creator of Sweet Serenade, spoke about her long-term vision for the event, saying her goal was for Sweet Serenade to become a household name, known for creating unforgettable experiences.
Ongoing Investigation
The LAPD and LAFD are continuing to investigate the slashing incident, and authorities have not released further details about the suspects involved or the ongoing status of the investigation.
