On board the USS Yorktown, veterans commemorate the anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Veterans from the Lowcountry gathered aboard the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on December 7, 2025, for a ceremony marking the 84th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. The event, organized with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10624, honored 25 South Carolinians killed in the 1941 assault, featuring wreath-laying into the Wando River by families.

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Henry L. Taylor spoke on the attack’s lasting significance, stressing that liberty is fragile and must be protected through unity and courage. Navy veteran Robert Knight, who served on the USS Forest starting in 1940, recounted meeting a Japanese pilot who led the Pearl Harbor attack postwar, describing him as a human who fulfilled his duty.

The ceremony highlighted living history, including a 97-year-old veteran’s experiences, and waived museum admission from 10-11 a.m. for attendees. A lunch followed at VFW Post 10624.
