A 68-year-old man in Moncks Corner has died in what officials say is Berkeley County’s first heat-related fatality of the year, according to the county coroner.
Heat-Related Death Under Investigation
The man was found outside his home on June 11. Authorities said his death is being investigated as related to extreme heat conditions.
Berkeley County Coroner Darrell Hartwell confirmed the case and warned that rising temperatures can pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
Rising Temperatures in the Area
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Berkeley County reached 93.2 degrees on the day of the incident. Officials say prolonged exposure to high heat can quickly lead to dangerous medical conditions.
Health Warning from Officials
Experts warn that heat-related illnesses can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. However, older adults, young children, and people with existing health problems are at higher risk.
Authorities advise people to:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid long periods in direct sunlight
- Take breaks in shaded or cool areas
- Limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours
Signs of Heat Illness
Health officials also highlight warning signs such as dizziness, heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, and confusion. If symptoms worsen or a person becomes unconscious, immediate medical attention is needed.
Officials continue to urge residents to take precautions as temperatures rise during the summer season.
