Charleston, South Carolina — On the final day of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, let’s look back.
It was memorable for multiple reasons. The main reason is because the United States has not had a landfalling hurricane since 2015.
The only storm to make landfall in the United States was Tropical Storm Chantal, which came ashore at Litchfield Beach. It did, however, cause significant rainfall and flooding along the Grand Strand and in southeastern North Carolina.
While the United States got a break this hurricane season, Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica.
It killed many and caused millions of dollars in damage. It was the most powerful hurricane to ever impact Jamaica. It is also one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls ever recorded in the Atlantic.
Another significant aspect of this hurricane season is how powerful some of these systems, like as Melissa, have become.
There were four big hurricanes: Erin, Gabrielle, Humberto, and Melissa. All but Gabrielle became Category 5 hurricanes.
This hurricane season demonstrated both the devastating power of hurricanes and the influence of steering currents.
We could have had many huge hurricanes hit the United States, but we are counting our blessings.
