North Charleston, South Carolina. Affordable housing remains a big concern in the Palmetto State, but change may be on the horizon. Gov. Henry McMaster signed new legislation today to expand housing options and revitalize towns.
The conversation was on creating communities in which people may live, work, and play all in one location.
The new law is intended to assist rehabilitate regions such as the old Navy Yard in North Charleston, with an emphasis on providing additional opportunities and long-term growth to the region.
Gov. McMaster and local officials say the measure will make homeownership more accessible, put people closer to their workplaces, and create new opportunities, all while increasing local resources.
Officials say Charleston County is still growing, particularly in North Charleston, and it is critical to keep up with the region’s rapid expansion while satisfying citizens’ housing demands.
Deon Tedder, a state senator, believes the bill is a vital step toward creating balanced, inclusive communities.
“The quality of life is certainly a big key here,” stated Senator Tedder. “Not only will this offer locations for people to go and work, but it will also establish workspaces for people who have small enterprises and entrepreneurs to use so that they can live and work in the same area. North Charleston is experiencing all of this with public transportation. We’re excited, but we need to remember that we want to involve everyone while also keeping things affordable.
The Navy Yard is one of numerous places set for rehabilitation, with officials wanting to transform outmoded spaces into new opportunities for families throughout the Lowcountry.
