A Georgia man was charged following an officer-involved shooting in Aiken County, South Carolina, after leading police on a chase.

The Incident

On May 8, troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol attempted to stop 39-year-old Anthony Hayes Cantwell for speeding on I-20 near mile marker 5. Cantwell fled, with deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office joining the pursuit. His vehicle was eventually stopped by a cable median barrier near mile markers 22 and 23.

Officer-Involved Shooting

Cantwell exited the vehicle armed with an AR-15 and ran into a wooded area. Deputies shot him after he allegedly assumed a shooting stance and pointed the weapon at them. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Charges

Cantwell was charged on May 14 with two counts of first-degree assault and battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted person, and three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm. He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
