SC guy stole about $40,000 from the American Legion where he worked, cops allege

A South Carolina man was arrested for allegedly stealing over $37,000 from the American Legion post where he worked.

The Arrest and Charges

David Savage, 58, of Aiken, was charged on May 14 with breach of trust with fraudulent intent for amounts exceeding $10,000. Savage served as the finance officer for American Legion Post 26. He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center and released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

The Alleged Theft

Between 2019 and 2025, Savage reportedly made numerous unauthorized transactions from the post’s TD Bank account, totaling $37,412.93. Details of how the money was spent have not been released.

Investigation and Prosecution

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division led the investigation at the request of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. Savage will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
