A routine Sunday gas stop turned into a life-threatening ordeal for Olivia Rembert Finch, who was severely burned when a road rage chase ended in a fiery crash at a Columbia gas station on May 17, 2026.
How the Incident Happened
Finch had just left church when a dispute between two drivers escalated into a dangerous chase. One driver, allegedly threatened with a firearm, lost control and crashed into a pump where Finch was standing, triggering a massive fire that engulfed her and nearby vehicles.
Finch had to crawl through a gap to escape and rolled on the ground to extinguish flames on her clothing before bystanders could help. She suffered severe burns to her hands, legs, and feet, requiring skin graft surgery.
Damage and Injuries
The crash destroyed three vehicles and damaged the gas station, leaving black soot, caution tape, and a missing pump. Two other people at the station were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while Finch’s recovery remains intensive and ongoing.
Eyewitness Accounts
Neighbor Bill Williams described the scene as “horrific,” emphasizing the danger to other people at the pumps. Witnesses recalled the sudden explosion of flames and the chaos that followed, underscoring how quickly a normal Sunday afternoon turned catastrophic.
Investigation Status
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said the vehicle involved in the chase left the area before deputies arrived. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.
