A South Carolina man working on a road crew was killed in a collision, according to the coroner

hen he was struck by a vehicle. Aiken County EMS transported him to Wellstar MCG Medical Health Center in Augusta, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigation Status

The circumstances surrounding the driver and potential criminal charges remain unclear. The incident is under investigation by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. An autopsy will be conducted in Newberry.

Traffic Fatalities Context

Through May 25, at least 323 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety (DPS). In 2025, a total of 914 traffic fatalities were reported statewide.

In Aiken County, 12 people have died in crashes so far this year, compared with 23 fatalities in 2025.
