An assault charge filed against Spartanburg County Councilman Monier Abusaft is set to be dismissed following a hearing on May 14, 2026.
Background of the Incident
The charge stems from an incident at USC Upstate during a Black History Month event. Video evidence showed that the alleged victim approached Abusaft in a lobby area, reportedly invading his personal space and making physical contact, including placing a hand on Abusaft’s shoulder and kissing him.
Court Ruling
The judge stated that Abusaft appeared to be defending himself during the encounter. While the formal ruling has not yet been entered into the court record, both parties have been notified of the decision.
Councilman’s Statement
“This is what I fully expected to happen,” Abusaft told 7News. “I knew from the very beginning what happened that day.”
