A man involved in a violent domestic incident in Sumter County has died after being shot during a confrontation with law enforcement.

Suspect Dies After Shootout

Authorities confirmed that Ray Hunt, 71, died at Prisma Health Richland after suffering injuries in a March 29 shooting involving a deputy.

What Happened

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at a home on Rhea Drive.

When the first deputy arrived:

  • Hunt was outside holding a woman at gunpoint
  • The woman had already been shot
  • The deputy ordered Hunt to drop his weapon

Officials say Hunt ignored the command and instead shot the woman again.

Exchange of Gunfire

To stop the threat and protect the victim, the deputy opened fire. Investigators said:

  • Hunt fired at the deputy
  • The deputy returned fire and shot Hunt multiple times
  • The situation was brought under control

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

Victims Hospitalised

Both Hunt and the injured woman were airlifted to hospital for treatment. Hunt later died from his injuries, while there has been no update on the woman’s condition.

Investigation Underway

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation, which is standard in cases involving officer-involved shootings. An autopsy is also scheduled as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Sheriff’s Statement

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said he believes the deputy acted appropriately in a dangerous situation and that the officer’s actions likely saved lives.
