A fire damaged the gymnasium roof at McCormick High School late Friday night, officials said.
Lightning Suspected as Cause of Fire
District officials reported that the fire began after 11 p.m. and is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. Firefighters responded quickly and worked through the night to contain the blaze.
Widespread Firefighting Efforts
Mutual aid crews from Abbeville County Fire Service and multiple departments across McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, Greenwood, and Laurens counties assisted at the scene. The incident also prompted a South Carolina Firefighter Mobilization request.
Fire Under Control, Damage Significant
Crews remained on-site into mid-morning to extinguish hot spots. The fire is now under control, and no injuries were reported. Officials confirmed that the gymnasium roof sustained significant structural damage.
