Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, a controversial figure known for his involvement in the world of big cats and his appearance in the 2021 Netflix docuseries Tiger King, has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy and money laundering charges. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Joseph Lawson III handed down a sentence of 12 years and one day in prison.
Charges and Conviction
Antle, 65, admitted to violating the Lacey Act, a federal law that prohibits trafficking in illegally taken wildlife, fish, or plants, including animals that are federally protected. This conviction stems from Antle’s involvement in the illegal wildlife trade, an issue that has brought significant attention to his operations in recent years. The charges against him are linked to activities that span several years, during which he trafficked and mistreated exotic animals.
Along with his prison sentence, Antle was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after completing his time behind bars. Additionally, he faces a fine of $55,000.
The Rise of Myrtle Beach Safari
Antle gained national fame through his work at Myrtle Beach Safari, a wildlife preserve he founded in 1982. The 50-acre preserve became well-known for its safari-like tours, where visitors could interact with exotic animals, including big cats, at a cost of nearly $400 per person. The unique and often controversial nature of the tours brought Antle both fame and scrutiny.
In addition to Myrtle Beach Safari, Antle also directed the Rare Species Fund, a nonprofit organization registered in South Carolina. His nonprofit’s mission focused on conservation efforts, though it has also been a subject of controversy given his other activities.
A Troubled Legacy
Antle’s sentencing marks a significant chapter in the ongoing scrutiny of wildlife trafficking and the exploitation of exotic animals. His case follows a broader trend of increasing attention to individuals and businesses profiting from the illegal trade of endangered and protected species. His actions and the legal consequences that followed serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving wildlife and respecting conservation laws.
