Melissa Samnath, a 35-year-old dual national of Jamaica and the United States, was killed while celebrating her birthday in St. James, Jamaica. Local authorities say she was left at a hospital in a wheelchair on April 29, allegedly by her partner, Dane Watson.
Incident Details
Police say Watson, believed to be Samnath’s husband, helped her from a car before leaving her at the hospital. She was found unconscious in a wheelchair with visible marks of violence and was pronounced dead shortly after medics arrived.
Arrest and Investigation
Nearly three weeks after her death, on May 16, Watson was taken into custody after family members turned him in. As of May 18, he has not been formally charged. The investigation is ongoing, and the case is being treated as a murder investigation.
Family Concerns
Samnath’s sister, Liza Marie Samnath, questioned whether Melissa and Watson were legally married, despite reports that they married in December. Liza shared text messages from Melissa the night of her death, where she asked her sister to contact police and track her location, which raised concerns.
Cause of Death
A post-mortem examination confirmed that Melissa died from multiple blunt force trauma to the head. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Honoring Melissa
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family give Melissa a “peaceful and beautiful farewell.” The fundraiser describes her as a strong, loving, and unforgettable woman who enjoyed traveling and spending time with loved ones.
