Two people are in critical condition and eight are injured after an underage driver, 14, allegedly causes a multi-vehicle crash: police.

A serious road accident in Australia has left two people in critical condition and several others injured after a teenage driver allegedly caused a four-car crash. The incident has raised fresh concerns about road safety, underage driving, and the dangers of inexperience behind the wheel.

Major crash in Queensland’s Fraser Coast

The accident happened on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road in Queensland, in the Fraser Coast region, north of Brisbane.

According to Queensland Police, the crash occurred around 6:10 p.m. on April 30. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a multi-vehicle collision.

Teen driver allegedly caused the crash

Police said a 14-year-old boy was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer that was unregistered, uninsured, and being driven without a licence.

The teenager reportedly lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the opposite lane, causing a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles.

Authorities believe that speed and lack of driving experience were key factors in the incident.

Four vehicles involved in collision

The crash involved:

  • A Mitsubishi Lancer (driven by the 14-year-old)
  • A Suzuki Swift
  • A Volkswagen Polo
  • A Hyundai Kona

Police said the Lancer first hit the Suzuki, then collided head-on with the Volkswagen. The Volkswagen was then struck from behind by the Hyundai.

Multiple injuries reported

A total of 10 people were injured in the crash, with two in critical condition.

Among those injured:

  • A 16-year-old girl in the Lancer suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital
  • The 18-year-old driver of the Suzuki was also seriously injured and airlifted
  • Other teenagers in the Lancer, including the driver, were taken to hospital in stable condition
  • Several other drivers and passengers, including a 2-year-old child, were taken to hospital as a precaution

Emergency crews had to rescue several people trapped inside their vehicles.

Investigation underway

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. They are also looking into how the teenager gained access to the vehicle, which is reportedly owned by a grandparent.

Authorities have asked anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Legal driving age reminder

In Queensland, drivers must be at least 17 years old to apply for a provisional licence. This case highlights the risks involved when unlicensed individuals operate vehicles.

Community impact and past incidents

The crash has deeply affected the local community. It occurred on the same road where a fatal accident involving a stolen car happened three years earlier, making the situation even more emotional for residents.

Officials say such incidents can bring back painful memories and highlight the importance of road safety awareness.

Road safety concerns

This accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving, especially when combined with inexperience and lack of proper licensing.

Key safety lessons include:

  • Never drive without a valid licence
  • Avoid speeding and reckless behaviour
  • Ensure vehicles are registered and insured
  • Always follow road rules and safety guidelines
