A deeply disturbing case from Texas has come back into focus as new courtroom details reveal what happened during the tragic death of a 7-year-old girl. The case has shocked many people not just because of the crime, but also due to the chilling behaviour of the accused during the incident.
What Happened to Athena Strand
The incident took place on November 30, 2022, in Paradise, Texas. Seven-year-old Athena Strand was abducted from her home while a delivery was being made.
The accused, Tanner Horner, was working as a delivery driver at the time. According to prosecutors, he took the child into his delivery truck and drove away.
Two days later, Athena’s body was found around 9 miles from her home.
Shocking Courtroom Evidence
During a recent court hearing in Fort Worth, prosecutors played video footage from inside the delivery truck. The video came from a surveillance camera installed in the vehicle.
The footage showed Horner placing Athena inside the truck and closing the door. When he entered the vehicle, the young girl could be heard asking him, “Where are you taking me?”
Although Horner tried to block the camera, the audio continued to record what happened next.
Disturbing Audio Details
One of the most shocking parts of the evidence was the audio captured inside the truck.
About 30 minutes into the recording:
- The song “Jingle Bell Rock” started playing on the radio
- Horner began singing along to the song
- At the same time, Athena could be heard crying and screaming in pain
He also threatened her, telling her to stay quiet or he would hurt her more.
The recording reportedly included:
- Sounds of the child asking for her mother
- Questions like whether he was a kidnapper
- Disturbing noises suggesting she was struggling
Because of the emotional impact, Athena’s parents chose to leave the courtroom before the video was shown.
What the Accused Claimed
Initially, Horner told police that the incident was an accident. He claimed that he hit Athena with his vehicle and then killed her out of fear.
However, the evidence presented in court tells a very different and much more serious story.
In a jail phone call with his mother, which was also played in court:
- He denied doing anything “weird”
- His mother questioned him about what really happened
- He admitted that her death was not accidental
Behaviour After the Crime
Another video shown in court revealed Horner’s actions the day after the crime.
While people and police were searching for Athena:
- He tried to drive through a blocked road
- A woman told him about the kidnapping
- He acted surprised and asked, “Are you serious?”
This behaviour raised further questions about his actions and mindset after the incident.
Legal Status of the Case
On April 7, Horner pleaded guilty to:
- Capital murder
- Aggravated kidnapping
Now, the court is deciding his punishment. The possible outcomes include:
- Death penalty
- Life imprisonment without parole
The trial is expected to continue for several weeks as the jury reviews all evidence.
Impact of the Case
This case has deeply affected not only the family but also the wider community. The details revealed in court have made it even more painful for those following the case.
It also raises serious concerns about safety, trust, and background checks in everyday services like deliveries.
