A 14-year-old boy in Pennsylvania has been charged with third-degree murder after accidentally shooting and killing a 14-year-old girl, authorities say. The Upper Darby Police Department responded to a 911 call on May 14 at a home on Springton Road. The victim was taken to a hospital but later died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Circumstances of the Shooting

Police say the shooting occurred while a group of friends, including two boys and two girls, were at the home. Investigators determined the gun belonged to the victim’s mother and was kept in her bedroom closet. The teens reportedly brought the firearm into a bedroom while playing with it, leading to the fatal accident.

Witnesses recalled the boy exclaiming, “Oh, my God, I just killed her,” immediately after the gun went off. Authorities emphasized that there was no dispute or violent intent.

The 14-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with third-degree murder. Police are working closely with family members and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Community Reaction

Neighbors described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and expressed sympathy for the family. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt stressed the importance of securing firearms, stating that “kids need to realize guns are not toys” and noting the lasting impact of careless decisions with firearms.
