Scalding hot water 'poured' over toddler's head, mom and boyfriend kept his injuries hidden as the boy died a'slow, excruciating' death: Police

An Arizona mother and her boyfriend are facing murder and child abuse charges after allegedly causing the death of her toddler.

Incident Details

On April 3, 22-month-old son of 24-year-old Artnesia Aaliyah Baptist suffered severe burns after the couple allegedly poured scalding hot water over his head. Burns covered roughly 40% of his body.

Concealment and Lack of Treatment

Authorities say Baptist and 21-year-old Alexsander Byrne hid the injuries from the child’s father and refused medical treatment. Byrne admitted they intentionally avoided care because they feared Child Protective Services involvement.

Child’s Death

The child later developed a severe infection and sepsis, dying on April 12. The medical examiner described a slow, painful decline caused by the untreated injuries.

Evidence

Investigators noted online searches by Byrne about burns and found the couple lied about the child’s condition, treating him only with burn cream, Tylenol, and aloe vera.

Charges and Bond

Both Baptist and Byrne were arrested in Maricopa County and are charged with murder and child abuse. They are being held on a $1 million cash-only bond each.
