Laverne “Kay” Parsons, 41, was brutally beaten to death in her Grovetown, Georgia home in March 2009. What initially appeared to be a burglary was later revealed to be a murder orchestrated by her neighbor, Rebecca “Becky” Sears, who manipulated her son into committing the crime.
The Discovery of the Crime
On March 25, 2009, a contractor discovered broken glass at Kay’s back door. Police arrived to find her severely beaten, with blood throughout the living room, hallways, and garage. Kay was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries after being taken off life support.
Affair and Motive
Investigators discovered that Sears had been having an affair with Kay’s husband, David Parsons. When the affair ended, Rebecca allegedly convinced her son, Christopher, that harming Kay was necessary. Authorities described the relationship between Rebecca and Christopher as unusually controlling, with her acting as the “mastermind” behind the plot.
Execution of the Murder
On the morning of the attack, Rebecca reportedly took her other children to school. Christopher then beat Kay to death with a hammer and baseball bat and staged a burglary at his mother’s house. Evidence linking Christopher to the murder was later found in a box in the attic.
Legal Proceedings
Both Rebecca and Christopher initially pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, armed robbery, and burglary. In May 2012, they entered negotiated guilty pleas and were sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Media Coverage
The case has been featured in multiple true crime programs, including 20/20: Murder Next Door and the Investigation Discovery series Mother, May I Murder?, which explore the shocking manipulation and premeditation behind Kay Parsons’ death.
