A shocking incident in Louisiana has left a community deeply disturbed after a teenage boy allegedly shot his own father following a disagreement about going to school. The case has raised serious concerns about youth violence, access to weapons, and safety around schools.
Teen Accused in Fatal Shooting of Father
The incident took place in Hammond on April 14. According to the Hammond Police Department, a 13-year-old boy is accused of shooting his father during a heated situation.
Police said the father had taken his son to Tangipahoa Alternative School, where the boy refused to get out of the car in the drop-off line.
What Happened at the School
School officials and a police officer tried to handle the situation calmly. After speaking with them, the father decided to take his son back home.
However, as their vehicle started leaving the school driveway:
- A gunshot was suddenly heard
- The SUV crashed into a nearby house
- Panic spread quickly in the area
The situation turned serious within seconds.
Suspect Detained Quickly
After the shooting, the boy reportedly stepped out of the vehicle with a weapon and walked toward the school building. A police officer present at the scene quickly detained him before anything worse could happen.
Authorities believe that this quick action may have prevented further harm.
Victim and Others Involved
The father was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Sadly, by April 18, officials confirmed that he had died from his injuries.
Another important detail:
- A 5-year-old child was also inside the car during the incident
Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
Charges Against the Teen
Initially, the boy was charged with attempted second-degree murder. After his father’s death, authorities said the charges are expected to be upgraded to second-degree murder.
However, for this charge to become official, a grand jury in Tangipahoa Parish will need to review the case.
The teen is currently being held at a detention centre for juveniles.
School Safety Measures
During the incident, the school was immediately placed under lockdown. Officials acted quickly:
- Students were moved into classrooms within minutes
- Doors were locked for safety
- Staff followed emergency protocols
These steps helped ensure that no other students or staff were harmed.
