A shocking case in San Antonio has left authorities and the community reeling after two young children were found dead inside a burned car.
Incident Overview
Marlene Vidal, 34, has been charged with two counts of capital murder of a person under 10 and one count of arson. The incident occurred early Friday morning in a warehouse parking lot on Richland Hills Drive.
A witness walking their dog reported seeing the car on fire around 5 a.m. and spoke with a woman at the scene who claimed she had already contacted authorities.
Discovery and Investigation
- Firefighters extinguished the burning white Hyundai, discovering the two children inside.
- Police identified Vidal as the suspect based on statements she made, surveillance footage, and evidence collected at the scene.
- The victims are reported as a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, who was autistic and nonverbal.
- The children’s father, who no longer lives with Vidal, confirmed the boy’s autism diagnosis and expressed devastation at the loss.
Suspect Information
Vidal is from Edinburg, Texas, and has family connections in the San Antonio area. She was arraigned Friday night, and she reportedly broke down in tears as the charges were read.
Current Status
Authorities have not determined a motive, though mental health concerns “may have played a role,” according to police. The investigation is ongoing as officers continue speaking with family members and other contacts related to the case.
Assistant Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr. stated: “So what I’ll commit to you now is that we’re going to continue working to find the truth, seek justice for these children, and support everyone affected by this tragedy. Everyone’s going to want to know why something like this happened, and unfortunately, the why is sometimes the hardest question to answer.”
