A mother and father in Indiana were arrested after their 6-month-old daughter died. Instead of taking her straight to the hospital when she was cold and unresponsive, the couple stopped for snacks and cigarettes.
Charges Against the Parents
Grant Ethan Stevens and Hannah Marie Evans, both 30, face felony charges. Stevens is charged with aggravated battery and two counts of neglect, while Evans faces one count of neglect resulting in death. Authorities say the baby showed signs of ongoing physical abuse.
What Happened on October 28, 2025
The incident began when Stevens was caring for the baby while Evans played a video game. The baby choked on her bottle, and Stevens tried back blows and CPR but did not alert Evans. Later, the couple went to bed without seeking medical help.
Morning Discovery and Hospital Trip
The next morning, Stevens found the baby lifeless. Instead of calling 911, they drove to the hospital, taking a 30-minute detour for a gas station stop. Doctors discovered the baby had a perforated bowel, fractured ribs, and was in septic shock. She was transferred to another hospital but died on October 31, 2025.
Medical Findings and Past Abuse
The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide. Evans admitted there had been past warning signs of abuse, including previous bruising while in Stevens’ care.
