Maryland man reversed car into tent holding child's birthday celebration, murdering woman and trapping victims underneath: Authorities

A Maryland man has been sentenced to prison after authorities said he crashed into a child’s birthday party, killing one woman and injuring several others before leaving the scene.

Woman Killed During Backyard Celebration

According to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, the crash happened on Oct. 18, 2025, during a birthday party in Bladensburg.

Officials said Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, was killed when a vehicle slammed into a tent where family members and children were gathered.

Authorities said at least eight children and five adults were also injured.

Driver Left the Scene After Crash

Investigators said Sunday Joseph, 66, accidentally reversed his vehicle over a curb and into the party.

Police said Joseph turned off the vehicle, grabbed his keys, and fled the area while victims remained trapped underneath the car.

Emergency crews later lifted the vehicle to rescue injured people.

Defendant Later Turned Himself In

Authorities said Joseph surrendered to police about 10 hours after the crash.

Prosecutors suggested he may have been under the influence, though they said they could not prove it because he left the scene before testing could be performed.

His attorney argued a medical condition affecting his legs may have contributed to the crash.

Judge Orders 10-Year Prison Sentence

Joseph pleaded guilty to:

  • Leaving the scene of a fatal crash
  • Multiple reckless driving charges

A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison, exceeding state sentencing guidelines.

He was also banned from driving and ordered to complete community service each year on the anniversary of the crash.

Families Say Trauma Remains

Victims’ relatives told local media the emotional impact continues months later, especially for the children who witnessed the crash during what was supposed to be a birthday celebration.
