A Wisconsin man is facing multiple charges after authorities said he shot and killed his wife at a nature preserve before later opening fire at a police department.
Woman Found Shot at Nature Preserve
According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses saw a man pull a woman from a vehicle and shoot her multiple times at Pewitt’s Nest Nature Preserve near Baraboo on May 8.
Deputies arrived and found Susan Paul, 80, dead in the parking lot from multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities identified the suspect as her husband, George Paul, also 80.
Police Department Later Targeted
Investigators said about an hour after the shooting, George Paul allegedly drove to the Sauk Prairie Police Department and fired several shots at the building’s entrance.
No officers or staff members were injured.
Police later stopped the suspect’s vehicle and took him into custody.
Suspect Made Disturbing Statements
According to court documents, George Paul allegedly told investigators he believed his wife was a “creature” pretending to be his wife for decades.
Authorities also said he claimed he shot at the police department to get officers’ attention regarding his beliefs.
Multiple Charges Filed
George Paul has been charged with:
- First-degree intentional homicide
- Recklessly endangering safety
- Intentionally pointing a firearm
- Criminal damage to property
- Discharging a firearm near a building
Officials said he remains in the Sauk County Jail.
A court hearing is scheduled for July 14.
