A Kansas man has been charged with first-degree murder after fatally shooting his estranged wife in Wichita.

Charges and Accusations

Joshua Orlando, 29, is accused of intentional and premeditated murder in the death of 25-year-old Ivy Unruh. Court records from Sedgwick County indicate he also faces additional charges connected to the shooting.

Details of the Shooting

The incident occurred on the morning of April 17, 2022, at the Remington Apartments on East 37th Street North. Officers arrived shortly after 8 a.m. and found Unruh near “Building 5” with a gunshot wound to her upper body. A firearm was recovered at the scene. She was transported to a hospital, where she died a few days later.

911 Call and Defendant Statement

Authorities say Orlando called 911 and admitted to shooting his wife. In the call, he explained that he and Unruh had argued:

  • He claimed she hit him first and he tried to defend himself
  • He admitted, “I shot her, I shot her”
  • He also asked EMS to help Unruh, saying, “I know she didn’t mean to hurt me”

Crime Scene Details

Police reported that Unruh was lying on her back on the stairway with her belongings nearby, including a backpack, purse, and Nintendo Switch console. Orlando’s handgun was found near her.

Background and Relationship History

Unruh had recently filed for divorce in August 2025, citing prior abuse. Investigators confirmed she had experienced verbal and physical abuse, with visible bruises documented by her supervisor at PBS Kansas, where she worked as a broadcast engineer.

Orlando told police that the couple’s ongoing arguments included disputes over property, including a Nintendo Switch and a firearm. On the morning of the shooting, an argument escalated after Unruh allegedly struck Orlando with the console. Orlando claimed he “blind fired” a single shot in response.

Timeline

Surveillance footage revealed Unruh left her apartment at 8:00:15 a.m., with the gunshot occurring 52 seconds after the hour. Orlando made the 911 call at 8:01:21 a.m.
