A disturbing incident on a Florida beach has led to the arrest of a man accused of threatening people with unusual objects, including a drill and a beach umbrella. The situation caused panic among beachgoers before police stepped in to control the situation.
Incident reported on Surfside beach
The घटना took place in Surfside, near Collins Avenue, just north of Miami Beach. According to authorities, the accused, 50-year-old Yacov Levi, was on a beach behind a condominium complex when the situation escalated.
Witnesses said Levi first asked to sit on a beach chair but became angry after being told he could not use it.
Suspect allegedly threatened beachgoers
Police say Levi became aggressive and picked up a beach umbrella, attempting to hit someone with it. Shortly after, he reportedly grabbed a drill and began running toward people while shouting threats.
Witnesses told investigators that Levi was heard saying, “I’m going to kill you,” while charging at individuals on the beach. Some people ran away to avoid being harmed.
Police respond quickly
Officers from the Surfside Police Department were called to the scene after reports of a man chasing people with a drill.
When officers arrived, they found Levi sitting on a beach chair holding the drill, which had a large digging attachment. Police ordered him to stop and used Tasers to control the situation before taking him into custody.
Property damage reported
Before being arrested, Levi allegedly used the drill to damage a beach chair, causing around $500 worth of damage. This added to the charges filed against him.
Charges and court appearance
Levi now faces several charges, including:
- Attempted aggravated battery
- Battery on a law enforcement officer
- Criminal mischief
He appeared in Miami-Dade County court for his first hearing on Friday.
Previous incident noted
Reports indicate that Levi had been involved in another unusual incident at the same beach in 2023. At that time, he was arrested for allegedly attempting to take a jet ski while naked, though that case was later dropped.
Investigation continues
Authorities are continuing to review the incident, including body camera footage recorded by officers at the scene. Witness statements are also being considered as part of the case.
Safety reminder for public places
Incidents like this highlight the importance of quick police response in crowded public areas. Beachgoers are encouraged to report suspicious or threatening behaviour immediately to ensure safety.
