A West Virginia man was found guilty of murdering a state trooper in a deadly ambush in Mingo County.

Guilty Verdict

Timothy Kennedy, 32, was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder in the death of 37-year-old West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard. He was also found guilty of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, disarming a law enforcement officer, and first-degree robbery.

The Ambush

On June 2, 2023, Sgt. Maynard responded to a shooting on Beech Creek Drive at the end of his shift. Kennedy reportedly opened fire on Maynard, shooting him three times and striking him with a gun while he was down. Maynard, a husband and father of two, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect and Defense

Kennedy fled but was arrested the same night. During trial, he claimed he was high on meth and hallucinating during the attack, expressing remorse and asking for forgiveness.

Next Steps

Kennedy is expected to be sentenced on July 7.
