A tense situation unfolded in Rio de Janeiro after a police operation led to gunfire near a popular tourist hiking spot, leaving more than 200 visitors temporarily stranded.

The incident happened at Morro Dois Irmãos, a well-known hiking destination overlooking Ipanema Beach.

Tourists had gathered early in the morning to watch the sunrise when:

  • Gunfire suddenly broke out in the nearby Vidigal favela
  • Guides instructed visitors to stay low and remain at the summit
  • Around 200 people were unable to descend safely

Police Operation Underway

Authorities had launched a major operation targeting suspected members of the Comando Vermelho, one of Brazil’s most well-known criminal organisations.

The operation involved:

  • Civil Police units from multiple regions
  • Prosecutors from Bahia
  • A coordinated effort to locate and arrest gang members

Chaos and Safety Measures

As gunfire echoed from below:

  • A police helicopter hovered over the area
  • Tourists stayed seated on the ground for safety
  • Roads nearby were blocked using a bus and debris

Despite the fear, guides helped keep the situation under control and prevented panic among visitors.

Situation Brought Under Control

After some time:

  • Police secured the area
  • Tourists were safely escorted down the trail
  • At least one suspect was arrested during the operation

Officials later confirmed the operation, known as “Duas Rosas II,” was aimed at dismantling criminal networks.
