A tense situation unfolded in Wisconsin when a large group of animal rights activists attempted to enter a dog breeding facility, leading to clashes with police. What started as a protest quickly turned into a confrontation involving force, arrests, and strong reactions from both sides.
What Happened in Blue Mounds
The incident took place in Blue Mounds, a small town near Madison, Wisconsin. Around 1,000 animal welfare activists gathered outside a beagle breeding and research facility known as Ridglan Farms.
The group was trying to enter the property and remove dogs they believed were being mistreated.
Police Response to the Protest
Law enforcement officials, including the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, were present to control the situation.
According to Sheriff Kalvin Barrett:
- Hundreds of protesters attempted to break into the property
- Some allegedly acted aggressively toward officers
- Roads were blocked, affecting emergency access
To control the crowd, police used:
- Rubber bullets
- Pepper spray
Several protesters were arrested, though the exact number has not been confirmed.
Barriers and Attempts to Enter
The facility had multiple security measures in place, including:
- A trench filled with manure
- Hay bales
- Barbed-wire fencing
Some protesters managed to cross the fence but were still unable to enter the main facility, where around 2,000 beagles are reportedly kept.
Protesters’ Actions and Reactions
The protest was organised by a group called Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs.
Their leader, Wayne Hsiung, was arrested during the protest.
Some activists expressed disappointment after failing to rescue any animals. Later, many moved to protest outside a jail in Madison.
Background of the Dispute
This was not the first time such an attempt was made.
- In March, activists entered the facility and took 30 dogs
- Police arrested 27 people during that earlier incident
The facility has been under scrutiny for its treatment of animals. However, Ridglan Farms has denied all allegations of cruelty.
Facility’s Position
According to its official statements, Ridglan Farms maintains that:
- There is no proven evidence of animal abuse
- The facility follows proper standards
However, it has agreed to give up its state breeding license starting July 1 as part of a legal agreement.
Escalation and Safety Concerns
Authorities also reported that:
- A person drove a pickup truck through the facility’s gate
- This action was considered dangerous and led to an arrest
Officials stated that such actions could have caused serious harm.
