A tragic shooting at a busy shopping centre in Louisiana has left one person dead and several others injured, shocking the local community and raising concerns about public safety.
What Happened at the Mall
The incident took place at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on April 23. According to police, shots were fired around 1:22 p.m. inside the mall, creating panic among shoppers and staff.
Thomas Morse Jr. confirmed during a press conference, reported by WDSU News, that officers quickly responded to the situation. Law enforcement teams reached the scene within minutes to control the area.
Victims and Injuries
Authorities reported that a total of six people were affected by the shooting:
- One person died from their injuries
- One victim underwent surgery
- Four others suffered minor injuries
Initial reports suggested more people were hurt, but the numbers were later corrected, according to CNN.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims, giving families time to be informed privately.
Cause of the Shooting
Police believe this was not a random attack. Instead, it started as a conflict between two groups inside the mall’s food court.
Unfortunately, innocent people nearby were caught in the crossfire, which led to the injuries and loss of life.
Suspects and Investigation
So far, five people have been taken into custody, and one weapon has been recovered. However, authorities believe more suspects may be involved.
Police are asking the public to share any videos or photos that could help with the investigation.
Impact on Students and Community
Jeff Landry shared that some of the victims are students from Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette.
The school released a statement expressing deep sadness and asked people to keep the students and their families in their prayers. Local leaders have also spoken out, calling the incident heartbreaking and senseless.
