Police in San Diego responded to reports of an active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Eckstrom Avenue on Monday, May 18, around 12:00 p.m. local time.
Incident and Casualties
The San Diego Police Department confirmed that the threat was “neutralized” about an hour later. Five people died in the attack, including two gunmen and a security guard. Law enforcement reported that the two teenage suspects were found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a car near the mosque.
Emergency Response
Authorities set up a reunification center at 4125 Hathaway Street for families and community members. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said emergency personnel were on the scene working to protect the community and secure the area.
Community Reactions
The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in the city and includes the Al Rashid School. Tazheen Nizam, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in San Diego, condemned the attack, saying that no one should fear for their safety while attending prayers or school.
