Donald Wooten, 27, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head in an attempt to kill their unborn child.
Details of the Attack
The shooting occurred in March 2023 near a walking trail at Chapel Hill Park in Decatur, Georgia. The victim, 22 weeks pregnant, was found by EMTs in a fetal position with a gunshot wound to the head. She survived but required an emergency C-section to save her child.
Motive and Investigation
According to an arrest affidavit, Wooten did not want the victim to have the child and became upset when she continued the pregnancy. Investigators corroborated the timeline with cellphone records, receipts, and text messages, which contradicted Wooten’s alibi. He attempted to erase evidence from his phone but police recovered crucial data.
Trial and Conviction
During the trial, the victim testified about her last memories of the park and Wooten. On April 20, Wooten was found guilty of attempted murder, criminal attempt to commit feticide, and possession of a firearm during a felony.
Sentencing
Wooten received a 60-year prison sentence, reflecting the severity of the violent crime and the attempt to harm the unborn child.
