A heartbreaking case from California has come to light, where a teenage girl with special medical needs lost her life under tragic circumstances. Authorities say the case involves serious neglect by the very people responsible for her care.
What Happened in the Case
According to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, two caregivers — Megan Fredrick (33) and Sherwood Johnson II (37) — were arrested on April 16. They are facing charges of murder and child abuse causing death.
The case began in January 2025 when deputies were called to a home in Live Oak, California, after a medical emergency was reported. Inside the house, they found a 14-year-old girl with developmental disabilities unresponsive. Sadly, she was later declared dead.
Victim’s Medical Condition
Officials revealed that the girl required constant care due to her condition. She depended fully on a feeding tube for nutrition and could not eat on her own.
This made her completely reliant on her caregivers for survival, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Investigation and Shocking Findings
Due to the suspicious nature of the case, detectives quickly started a detailed investigation. What they found was deeply disturbing.
An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was starvation and neglect. Authorities officially ruled the manner of death as homicide.
This means investigators believe her death was not accidental but the result of severe care failure.
Arrest of the Caregivers
After the investigation, both suspects were identified and charged. By that time, they had already moved out of California.
They were later arrested on outstanding warrants and are currently being held at the Spokane County Jail. Officials are now working on bringing them back to Sutter County for further legal action.
Official Statement
Sheriff Brandon Barnes shared a statement expressing sorrow over the case. He said the death of a child is always deeply tragic and praised his team for handling the investigation with care and professionalism.
Legal Status
As of now, it is not clear whether the accused have hired lawyers or made any public statements. The legal process will continue as they are extradited back to California.
