A New York man is facing serious charges, including attempted murder and burglary, after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and stabbing her son multiple times.

Incident Details

Robert Schreiber, 42, was indicted on May 1, 2025, in connection with the violent attack on his ex-girlfriend’s 22-year-old son. The incident occurred in Patchogue, NY, on Long Island, just one day after Schreiber’s breakup with his long-term girlfriend on April 17.

Breaking and Entering

According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, Schreiber allegedly broke into the home around 8 a.m. on April 18, using an unlocked window while everyone inside was still sleeping. Schreiber then went to the victim’s bedroom, kicked in the door, and proceeded to stab him seven times in the head, neck, and shoulder.

Victim’s Escape

The victim’s family members intervened, and 911 was called. The victim was able to escape down the stairs before police arrived. He was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital, where he received numerous staples to close his stab wounds. His identity has not been disclosed.

Arrest and Evidence

Schreiber was arrested at the scene by responding officers, and investigators found the knife used in the attack in his possession.

Charges

Schreiber is facing several charges, including:

  • Second-degree attempted murder
  • First-degree burglary
  • First-degree attempted assault
  • Second-degree assault
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Endangering the welfare of a child
  • Second-degree harassment

Legal Proceedings

Schreiber is being held on $1,000,000 bond and is scheduled for his next court appearance on May 28. If convicted of the highest charges, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

Statement from District Attorney

“This was a violent attack on a young man in his own home,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “Domestic violence does not always end when a relationship does, it often escalates. We will aggressively prosecute this defendant and seek justice for the victim and his family.”
