A tragic incident in New Mexico has highlighted how quickly road rage can turn deadly, even for people who are not involved. A young man lost his life simply because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
What Happened in Albuquerque
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Roberto Carlos Pineda Arriaza was fatally shot during a road rage incident in Albuquerque.
The incident happened near Bridge Boulevard and Sunset Road, where Arriaza was showing his new motorcycle to a friend. Suddenly, gunshots were fired, and he was struck in the head.
How the Shooting Occurred
Investigators say the shooting was not aimed at Arriaza. Instead, the suspect, Rory Horowitz, was allegedly targeting another vehicle during a heated road rage situation.
Horowitz and a woman named Ellyssa Salazar were reportedly travelling in a Mitsubishi when they encountered another vehicle. Something triggered an argument on the road, which quickly escalated.
During the incident, Horowitz allegedly opened fire at the other vehicle. Tragically, one of the bullets hit Arriaza, who had no connection to the conflict.
Victim’s Condition and Death
After the shooting, emergency services rushed Arriaza to the hospital. He was in critical condition and fought for his life for several days.
Sadly, he passed away three days later due to his injuries.
Arrest and Charges
Authorities identified Rory Horowitz as the main suspect based on witness statements and evidence. He was later tracked to a house in El Paso, Texas, where he was arrested along with Ellyssa Salazar.
Initially, Horowitz faced multiple serious charges, including:
- Shooting from a vehicle
- Aggravated assault
- Aggravated battery
After Arriaza’s death, officials said they would upgrade the charges to include an open count of murder.
Salazar has been charged with:
- Tampering with evidence
- Harbouring a fugitive
Other Developments in the Case
Police also arrested another individual involved in the road rage situation. However, investigators said there is no evidence that this person fired any shots.
Authorities are still searching for the Mitsubishi vehicle used during the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
