A New Mexico woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting and killing her estranged husband after months of conflict over affairs and marital problems.
Woman Sentenced in Husband’s Killing
Erica Valdez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and firearm-related charges in the 2023 death of her husband, Joel Valdez, 39, in Albuquerque.
She was sentenced in Bernalillo County court this week.
Couple Had Ongoing Relationship Problems
Prosecutors said the couple had been fighting for months over alleged affairs involving both Erica and Joel Valdez.
The conflict reportedly escalated on July 4, 2023, when Joel confronted Erica and another man, James Sena, at a Motel 6 where Sena worked as a security guard.
Authorities said Erica threatened Joel and another woman during the confrontation.
Fatal Shooting Happened Later That Night
Police said Erica later went to the home she shared with Joel and opened fire outside the residence.
Investigators said she later returned with Sena and fatally shot Joel a few streets away.
According to police, the couple’s 16-year-old daughter later found her father’s body in the road.
Prosecutors Describe Escalating Tension
Court documents stated the relationship had become increasingly hostile in the months before the shooting, with arguments, insults, and accusations of cheating from both sides.
Prosecutors said Erica repeatedly antagonized Joel and tensions inside the home continued to grow.
Co-Defendant Took Plea Deal
James Sena, who was initially charged with conspiracy, later accepted a plea deal on a separate firearm offence. The conspiracy charge against him was dismissed.
