A heartbreaking case from Florida has led to serious charges against a mother months after her young child was killed in a road accident. Authorities say the tragedy could have been prevented, and the incident has now resulted in legal action focused on child safety and supervision.

Mother charged months after child’s death

A 32-year-old woman, Alejandra Cruz Segundo, has been charged in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son. The case relates to an incident that took place in October 2025 in St. Petersburg.

According to reports, she is facing charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect. The charges were filed several months after the incident as investigators reviewed evidence and witness statements.

Tragic accident on residential road

The accident happened on 49th Avenue North when a pickup truck was involved in the incident. The vehicle, a Ford F-450, was being driven by a 34-year-old man identified as Christian Javier Rodriguez.

Officials from the Florida Highway Patrol said the truck was initially stopped in the eastbound lane when the toddler suddenly entered the roadway.

Child ran into the path of the truck

According to the investigation, the 2-year-old child came out from a nearby home and ran into the street without his parents noticing. Reports state that the child moved directly in front of the truck.

When the vehicle started moving again, the driver reportedly did not see the child due to his small size. Tragically, the child was struck and died at the scene from his injuries.

Driver not charged in the case

Authorities confirmed that there was no sign that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Investigators also said there was no indication of wrongdoing on his part.

As a result, no criminal charges were filed against the driver in connection with the crash.

Witnesses raise concerns about supervision

The case against the mother is largely based on witness statements. According to the arrest report, several witnesses claimed that the child and his siblings were often allowed to play outside unsupervised near the street.

Officials stated that leaving very young children alone in such an area could create a serious risk of injury or death.

Legal action and custody status

Alejandra Cruz Segundo has been taken into custody and booked at the Pinellas County Jail.

She faces one count each of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect. The legal process will determine the outcome of the case in the coming months.

Importance of child safety awareness

This tragic incident highlights how important it is to closely supervise young children, especially near roads or areas with moving vehicles.

Simple precautions can make a big difference:

  • Always keep an eye on young children outdoors
  • Avoid letting toddlers play near roads unsupervised
  • Use barriers or gates if living near traffic areas
  • Teach basic road safety from an early age
