An Alabama man is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly leaving his 1-year-old son to die in a hot car while he drank alcohol, authorities say.

Incident Details

Tuscaloosa County deputies responded around 5 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 11000 block of Stone Ridge Court in Brookwood, where family members found the boy deceased in a car seat inside a vehicle. Temperatures that day reached the mid-90s.

Father’s Actions

Logan Keith Chewning, 30, was reportedly the only adult responsible for the child that day. Authorities said he admitted to drinking throughout the day and leaving the home at one point to buy more alcohol. Chewning told police he mistakenly believed the boy was sleeping in his crib and did not check on him.

Charges and Custody

Chewning was arrested and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he is being held without bond. Authorities confirmed the investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will determine the child’s official cause of death.
