Authorities are investigating the deaths of Karen Whitaker, 79, and Donald Whitaker, 80, found dead in their Bermuda Dunes home on May 15. The couple lived in the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, an exclusive golfing community.
Police report that the deaths are being treated as a homicide, though specific details about the injuries have not been released.
Alleged Scam Targeting Karen Whitaker
Friends say Karen Whitaker had been sending money to a scammer for months, believing she was communicating with actor Tom Selleck. According to friend Joy Miedecke, the scam began after Karen posted on Facebook about a deceased friend, which led someone to text her claiming to be Selleck.
Over several months, Karen reportedly sent gift cards ranging from $80 to $800, eventually escalating to thousands of dollars, despite family efforts and protective measures to limit her financial access.
Even a representative connected to Tom Selleck reportedly tried to convince her it was a scam, but she continued to believe the messages.
Family and Community Response
Donald Whitaker was reportedly “full of grief” after learning about the scam, according to Miedecke. Family members and friends had previously contacted Adult Protective Services and law enforcement about the situation.
