Wrapped in blankets: Man convicted in the killing of his 2-month-old baby after keeping the child's corpse for days

A Texas man has been convicted in connection with the death of his 2-month-old son and could face decades in prison following a jury verdict this week.

Jury Convicts Father in Infant’s Death

Miguel Angel Ortiz Jr., 38, was found guilty by a Hidalgo County jury of injury to a child by omission in the June 2025 death of his infant son. Jurors recommended a 30-year prison sentence, though a judge will make the final sentencing decision.

Ortiz was acquitted of more serious charges, including capital murder, murder, injury to a child, and aggravated assault of a family member.

Investigation Began After Wellness Check

The case started when Pharr police conducted a welfare check at a residence after receiving information that the infant had reportedly died days earlier.

Officers discovered the 2-month-old deceased inside the home. An autopsy later found multiple injuries, including bruising to the skull, chest, and buttocks.

Sentencing Set for Next Week

Ortiz remains in custody pending sentencing, which has been delayed until next week.

The child’s mother, Karina Aidee Ramirez, also faces charges related to the infant’s death, including capital murder of a child under 10, injury to a child, and child endangerment. Her case remains pending, and a court hearing is scheduled for June 15.

Authorities continue to pursue the case as legal proceedings move forward.
