An Ohio couple has been sentenced to prison after being convicted in the death of their 11-year-old son, whose death was ruled the result of medical neglect.
Parents Sentenced
John L. Towne, 46, and Ahhra K. Pugh, 45, were each sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 2024 death of their son, Hunter Towne.
The couple was previously convicted on charges including murder, involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and permitting child abuse.
Child Died From Medical Neglect
Authorities responded to a hotel in Independence, Ohio, on Jan. 10, 2024, after receiving a report of a deceased child.
Hunter, who suffered from Hirschsprung’s disease and other health issues, was found dead in the family’s hotel room. The medical examiner later ruled his death was caused by caregiver medical neglect.
Mother Apologizes in Court
During sentencing, Pugh apologized for her son’s death and acknowledged failing to get him the medical care he needed.
She told the court that she regretted her actions and said she had lost everything that mattered to her.
Convictions Upheld
Prosecutors argued that the parents failed to provide necessary medical care despite Hunter’s serious health condition. Both will serve 15-year prison sentences following their convictions.
