Authorities in Virginia identified the driver of a bus that slammed into multiple cars early on Friday, May 29, killing five people and injuring dozens more.

Crash Details

Just after 2:30 a.m., the bus “failed to slow” as it approached a work zone, striking six vehicles. At least 34 people were injured and taken to area hospitals. Four of the victims were in an Acura SUV, and one was in a Chevrolet Suburban.

Driver Identified

The driver was Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, N.Y. He also sustained injuries, though the extent is unknown. Officials noted that Dong, a U.S. citizen originally from China, does not speak English and received his commercial driver’s license from New York State in 2024. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Bus Operator

The bus was reportedly operated by E&P Travel, Inc., based in Kings Mountain, N.C. The company has four vehicles, 11 employees, and three previous speeding-related violations.

Witness Accounts

Passenger Rhonda Wright described the crash: “The bus was going really, really fast… I had to escape through the emergency exit window when smoke started coming.” Her quick-thinking fellow passenger helped her escape safely.

Hospital Updates

Of the injured, five of 19 patients at Mary Washington Hospital have been discharged, while two remain in critical condition. All 12 patients at Stafford Hospital have been discharged.

Official Statements

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger expressed condolences on X, saying she is praying for a quick recovery for the injured. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash.
