A violent stabbing happened in broad daylight on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, resulting in the death of Berry Henderson, described by family as a “gentle giant.”
Attack Begins After Dog Incident
On Wednesday, May 20, Henderson, 37, defended himself from a pit bull near a bus stop on Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue around 3 p.m. Surveillance footage shows the dog chasing him into the street and biting his legs. Henderson used a knife to defend himself.
Group Assault on Henderson
After the dog incident, four men, including the dog’s owner, allegedly attacked Henderson. According to the LAPD, three men used bodily force and a small bat, while the fourth stabbed him multiple times. One attacker was reportedly armed with a machete.
Henderson Tried to Escape
Henderson briefly managed to flee the attackers, staggering across Las Palmas Avenue while visibly bloodied. His cousin, Demeya Brewer, said, “He was running away… they still continued to attack him.”
Fatal Injuries and Hospitalization
Henderson sustained multiple stab wounds and was transported about 20 minutes to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where he later died. His family noted in a GoFundMe that he passed away alone before they could be notified, calling his death an “unimaginable loss.”
Suspects in Custody
Three suspects were initially arrested by LAPD, while the fourth, who allegedly stabbed Henderson with a knife, initially fled but has now been taken into custody. LAPD has not shared information on the status of the pit bull.
Family Remembers Henderson
Henderson’s cousins described him as calm, authentic, and deeply loved. Sharon Grimes noted that bystanders did not intervene during the attack. The GoFundMe fundraiser emphasizes that Henderson was a “gentle giant” who mattered to his family and community.
