Police: Misinformation spreads after woman attacked in front of kid in Gaffney

The Gaffney Police Department is urging the public not to spread false information online as officers continue investigating a violent assault that happened Sunday morning in Cherokee County.

According to police, officers responded around 11:32 a.m. on May 10 to the parking lot of the Cherokee County Administrative Building after reports of an assault.

Woman Attacked Near Stroller

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the area and said the video showed a woman placing her children into a stroller when a man approached her. Police said the suspect waved his arm toward the woman before pulling an object from underneath his shirt.

Authorities said the man then placed his hand on the stroller, which had a child inside, before allegedly striking the woman multiple times with a weapon. The victim could reportedly be heard screaming during the attack before the suspect ran away on foot.

Police said the incident appears to be isolated, and investigators quickly began following several leads.

Police Address False Social Media Claims

The department said misinformation began spreading online shortly after the assault, including Facebook posts claiming to identify the suspect.

According to police, the man shown in circulating photos was identified as Andre Logan, who had an unrelated active warrant through South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Logan has since been arrested on that outstanding warrant, but police stressed that no suspect information in the assault case has officially been released.

Officials said they delayed making a public statement because investigators were actively working multiple credible leads and did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the community.

“We would like to remind the public that sharing false or unverified information can negatively impact active investigations and potentially hinder law enforcement efforts,” the department said in a statement.

Investigation Continues

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information about the assault to contact the Gaffney Police Department.
