Woman punished for assisting sister following fatal SC stabbing

A Charleston County jury has convicted Keyarra Zakyah Gosa for her role in helping her sister evade law enforcement after a 2020 homicide in North Charleston. Gosa was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five years suspended, followed by five years of probation.

Conviction details

Gosa was found guilty of accessory after the fact of murder after a four-day trial. Prosecutors stated that Gosa’s actions were critical in assisting her sister, Nylesia Mullins, who had brutally murdered 32-year-old Christopher Brown in May 2020.

Homicide and crime scene details

On May 28, 2020, Mullins fatally stabbed Brown at least 73 times inside a townhome rented by their mother in North Charleston. A family friend discovered Brown’s body later that morning, with large amounts of blood found throughout the residence. Investigators noted the home smelled of bleach, and blood was found in areas that appeared to have been cleaned.

Gosa’s involvement

Following the murder, Mullins called Gosa for help while still at the crime scene. Surveillance video and forensic evidence showed Gosa arriving at the townhome around 3 a.m., staying for nearly an hour, and then driving her sister to her apartment. The next day, Gosa accompanied her mother to the North Charleston Police Department, where she gave a statement about the homicide and her sister’s whereabouts. However, she provided false and misleading information to authorities.

Evidence and further investigation

A search of Gosa’s vehicle later revealed blood-related evidence, including a bottle of wound wash and yellow rubber gloves that tested positive for blood. Additionally, blood was found on the passenger-side door of the vehicle. Gosa’s actions were said to have helped Mullins avoid capture for a time, as Mullins fled to North Carolina, where she was eventually arrested by U.S. Marshals in June 2020.

Subsequent legal proceedings

Mullins pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in July 2025 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Their mother, Annie Mullins, also pleaded guilty to providing false information to law enforcement in January 2026, resulting in a three-day jail sentence.
