A brush fire in Aiken County, South Carolina, caused major disruption on Friday, affecting traffic and local schools. Emergency teams quickly reached the spot and worked hard to control the situation, while officials asked people to avoid the area for safety reasons.
Brush Fire Reported Near I-520
According to officials, the fire started along Interstate 520 near Belvedere Clearwater Road in the Belvedere area. The incident took place within the Belvedere Fire District, where first responders rushed to control the flames.
Teams from North Augusta Public Safety confirmed that the fire was serious enough to require immediate road closures and safety measures.
Fire Largely Contained
Firefighters later shared an important update in the afternoon. Crews from the Belvedere Fire Department said the fire has been mostly contained.
However, some areas were still being treated, and firefighters continued to spray water to make sure the fire did not spread again. Such follow-up work is common in brush fires, as dry areas can easily catch fire again.
Highway Closure Causes Traffic Issues
Due to the fire, a major part of Interstate 520 was shut down. Authorities confirmed that the eastbound lanes heading towards Interstate 20 were completely closed at Belvedere Clearwater Road.
This closure led to traffic problems in the area, and drivers were advised to take alternate routes and avoid the location until the situation was fully under control.
Public Asked to Stay Away
Officials strongly requested that people stay away from the area while emergency teams were working. Fires near highways can be dangerous due to smoke, reduced visibility, and the risk of spreading flames.

Schools Dismiss Students Early
The fire also affected nearby schools. The Aiken County School District announced early dismissal for students at:

Parents of students who travel by car were asked to pick up their children early. At the same time, bus transportation was arranged for other students.
All after-school activities were cancelled to ensure everyone’s safety.

Several emergency teams joined the effort to control the fire. Along with local fire crews, the South Carolina Forestry Commission also responded to the situation.
