A tragic road accident in Saluda County, South Carolina, has claimed the life of a 61-year-old motorcycle rider late Wednesday night. The incident involved a collision with a deer followed by a second crash with another vehicle that fled the scene, according to officials.
Victim Identified by Authorities
The victim has been identified as Mark W. Wharton, a resident of Monetta. Angie Rita confirmed his identity on Thursday. The accident has left the local community shocked as investigations continue.
How the Crash Happened
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 10:10 p.m. on US 378, also known as Columbia Highway.
Officials shared the following sequence of events:
- Wharton was riding a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle heading west
- Near Roseland Drive, the motorcycle struck a deer
- After the impact, Wharton was thrown onto the road
- A second, unknown vehicle then ran over him and fled the scene
Sadly, Wharton died at the spot. Authorities are still trying to determine whether the initial crash with the deer or the second collision caused his death.
Investigation Still Ongoing
The case is currently under investigation by the Highway Patrol. Officials have not confirmed whether Wharton was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. It is also unclear what happened to the deer.
